Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has urged Africa to “save the world from homosexuality” just days after the Ugandan parliament passed a bill that criminalizes homosexuality with the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality”.

Under the new law, Ugandans will be banned from promoting, abetting, and conspiring to engage in same-sex relationships.

The legislation has been condemned by human rights groups as “appalling”.

Speaking on April 2, Museveni referred to homosexuality as “a big threat and danger to the procreation of human race”, and said that “Africa should provide the lead to save the world from this degeneration and decadence, which is really very dangerous for humanity”.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International has called on Museveni to veto the bill, which it says is “a grave assault” on LGBTQ people.
