Over the last two weeks, around 6,000 people, mostly women, have fled the fighting in Sudan and crossed the border to Central African Republic, as reported by the UN refugee agency.
The UNHCR said in a tweet that 70% of those who fled were women, 15% were girls, 10% were men, and 400 were repatriated. Central African Republic, located southwest of Sudan, is among the poorest countries globally and has been suffering from its civil conflict since 2013.
Heavy fighting between army general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, who heads the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has trapped millions of Sudanese in their homes.
Official figures indicate that at least 528 people have been killed and 4,599 injured, but the actual number is believed to be higher.
The UN’s humanitarian coordination agency, OCHA, revealed on Thursday that nearly 3,000 people had entered the country in the northeast province of Vakaga, which shares a border with Sudan and were living in makeshift camps.
The agency expressed concern about the impact of soaring prices of essential products on the 120,000 people in the north of the country who needed immediate food aid.
According to the UN, 75,000 people have been displaced inside Sudan, while another 20,000 have fled to neighbouring Chad, and 4,000 to South Sudan to the west and 3,500 to Ethiopia in the southeast.
