Frank Lampard provides insight into convincing Timo Werner to join Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has this weekend opened up on the role he played in helping to convince Timo Werner to join the club this summer.

Blues switch

Following weeks of rampant speculation, Werner’s Stamford Bridge switch was of course finally made official on the 18th of June.

On the back of another scintillating season in Germany, during which the versatile attacker racked up 34 goals and 10 assists across all competitions, Chelsea stumped up the required £47 million to activate Werner’s RB Leipzig release clause.

And the 24-year-old certainly didn’t take long to provide fans of his new club with a glimpse of what he is set to bring to the table over the seasons to come, after finding the net just 4 minutes into his Chelsea bow late last month:

‘Needs to feel that’

As such, with the Londoners set to get their Premier League campaign underway in a little over 24 hours’ time, the Chelsea faithful have understandably begun to express their excitement regarding Werner’s potential impact.

Others, though, have been left to consider what might have been.

Before sealing a move to southwest London, the in-demand Werner was actually widely expected to join Liverpool.

It has since been revealed, meanwhile, that Manchester City also expressed a keen interest in his services:

In the end, though, the Chelsea project, along with the Blues’ willingness to cough up the fee demanded by Leipzig, saw them beat out all competition to clinch Werner’s signature.

And, as outlined above, Frank Lampard has, this weekend, provided an insight into his own role in convincing the German that a move to Stamford Bridge was the correct next step in his career.

When drawn on the topic during a media session over the weekend, the Chelsea boss revealed that the key to his pitch was making Werner feel wanted, with the initial ‘manager-player’ bond a crucial aspect of any transfer:

‘You understand that when there is competition from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City that you need to state your best case to the player.’

‘Having been that player at one point, I tried to sell the club to the best of my ability when I spoke to players. Petr in his role does the same.’

‘With a player like Timo, we were very keen to bring him in. He needs to feel that from us. I loved everything that he said to me in those conversations, the same with all the players.’

‘That manager-player conversation is really important because our relationship needs to be good. All you can do is your best as a club.’

‘I think we can be happy that we have brought in players of their level. That is just how we tried to work. Now it is stage two, get them settled and playing to the best of their ability.’
