Fulham ‘join race’ for Callum Wilson but face competition from Spurs following Mourinho’s ‘personal contact’

The latest word in the media this week suggests that Fulham have positioned themselves firmly in the race for Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson.

Cherries down

Following a 5-year stay in the Premier League, Bournemouth’s return to the Championship was confirmed late last month.

A difficult campaign for the Cherries, during which the club’s star men struggled to produce their brilliant best, eventually saw their battle against relegation come down to the final day.

Heading into Gameweek 38 of the Premier League season, all of Bournemouth, Watford and Aston Villa were still in with a shot of maintaining their top-flight status.

And Eddie Howe’s men, to their credit, did their part, securing an impressive 3-1 win at Goodison Park.

This, however, did not prove enough to keep the Vitality outfit up, as Aston Villa’s 1-1 stalemate at West Ham doomed both Bournemouth and Watford to life back in the Championship.

Wilson in demand

The weeks since the Cherries’ relegation, meanwhile, have seen a number of the club’s key men move on, with Nathan Ake having joined Manchester City, and Ryan Fraser now a free agent following the expiration of his contract.

Long-time manager Eddie Howe also opted to depart, whilst veterans Simon Francis and Andrew Surman, like Fraser, are now seeking out new clubs.

The next of Bournemouth’s stars expected to move on, meanwhile, comes in the form of Callum Wilson.

Despite a difficult campaign in 2019/20, during which he managed to find the net just 8 times in the Premier League, hitman Wilson has previously made abundantly clear that he is a top-flight calibre player.

As such, it appears altogether unlikely that he will still be plying his trade at the Vitality next season.

And, as outlined above, amid mounting speculation surrounding his future, another potential landing spot for the 28-year-old have been revealed.

Recent weeks have seen the likes of Newcastle United and Tottenham named as keen suitors, with Football Insider having just yesterday gone as far as to claim that Jose Mourinho has ‘personally contacted’ Wilson over the possibility of a move to north London.

The Lilywhites, though, look set to face stern competition from another of the capital’s clubs, in the form of Fulham.

As per a report from the reliable Mike McGrath of the Telegraph, the Cottagers are set to ‘join the race’ for Wilson imminently.

Scott Parker is said to be eager to add proven top-flight experience to his squad ahead of Fulham’s return to the Premier League, with Wilson viewed as an ideal addition.

Bournemouth, for their part, though, are not expected to allow their star hitman to depart on the cheap, meaning a bidding war could well be set to break out over the coming weeks.
