Updates surrounding a pair of Liverpool stars have emerged online on Thursday, as Jurgen Klopp’s men prepare to get the defence of their Premier League title underway versus Leeds.
Gini staying put?
The first piece of news concerns the future of Georginio Wijnaldum.
Dutch international Wijnaldum, despite his crucial role in Liverpool’s midfield, has of course been hotly tipped for an Anfield exit this summer.
This comes with the 29-year-old’s contract on Merseyside set to expire next summer, and new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman reportedly eager to coax his fellow countryman to the Camp Nou.
In addition, Wijnaldum would likely need to make way if Liverpool’s long-standing pursuit of Thiago Alcantara is to bear fruit.
If the latest word stemming from the English media this evening is to be believed, however, then the Reds mainstay’s exit may in fact not be as clear-cut as previously thought.
As per a report from Sky Sports, Wijnaldum has held a ‘productive conversation’ with Jurgen Klopp, over his future at the club.
It is suggested that both player and manager made clear their desire to continue working alongside one another, with Wijnaldum, in turn, hopeful of an imminent contract offer on the part of the Premier League champions:
Wijnaldum wants to stay at Liverpool and hopes an offer of a contract extension from the club will be the result of a productive conversation with his manager, who is keen for him to stay. 📝

The 2nd piece of significant news surrounding Liverpool’s squad to have emerged online today comes in the form of a fitness update.
The Merseysiders are of course set to get their 2020/21 campaign underway on Saturday evening, in a highly anticipated meeting with Leeds United.
One key player to have missed the club’s last competitive outing, a Community Shield defeat at the hands of Arsenal two weeks ago, though, came in the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
As such, there had since been mild concern surrounding the potential involvement of the English international at Anfield this weekend.
As confirmed by Alexander-Arnold himself earlier today, though, he is feeling ‘good’ and ‘fit’ ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League opener, with the stopper therefore looking odds-on to feature from the off:
Trent ready for Saturday: “I obviously played 80-85 mins for England; I felt good, I felt fit, and obviously no niggles or injuries off the back of that. Coming back into training today, obviously excited for the weekend. It’s obviously a tough test, a newly-promoted team.” #LFC
