Giroud to stay at Chelsea despite Inter Milan interest as Italian side loan out Radja Nainggolan

Radja Nainggolan out

The Belgian midfielder Radja Nainggolan’s time at Inter Milan looks to be coming to an end. The former Roma star will be returning to the club where he made his name, Cagliari.

The 32 year-old came through the ranks at Piacenza but was signed by Cagliari in 2010 and went on to make over 120 Serie A appearances for the club. Linked to plenty of large sides around Europe, eventually the Belgian moved to Roma where he made the biggest impact on the Italian league and established himself as one of the country’s best midfielders and integrated himself into the Belgian national side.

Playing in such a talented group of Belgian players, it is unsurprising that Nainggolan has only earned 30 caps for his country. However, when you consider the talent within, earning 30 with the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Axel Witsel, Moussa Dembele, Youri Tielemans and Marouane Fellaini is an achievement in itself.

From Roma he joined Inter Milan. However, after just one full season with the Nerazzurri, he returned to Cagliari to have another successful season at the club where he made his name. Remaining with Inter at the start of the 2020/21 season, Nainggolan fell out of favour with Antonio Conte and now look set to return so Cagliari for another loan.

Giroud to stay

As mentioned in Fabrizio Romano’s tweet regarding Nainggolan, the Italian journalist also confirmed that Inter Milan will be rejected in any possible pursuit of French forward Olivier Giroud.

“Inter were also interested in Olivier Giroud, but Chelsea plan to keep him in January too. He’s staying,” wrote Romano.

The French striker has faced some difficulties during his time at Chelsea. Giroud joined the west London club from city rivals Arsenal after he could not nail down a starting place after the acquisition of Alexandre Lacazette.

However, minutes at Chelsea were no more guaranteed than they were in north London. At the time, Alvaro Morata was still the leading striker for the Blues and even after he left, the return of youth product Tammy Abraham further frustrated the Frenchman’s situation.

In the previous summer, Chelsea moved to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, congesting the striking opportunities for Giroud even further. However, Giroud has performed very well this season including four goals in a single Champions League match against Sevilla.

There is therefore no surprise to see that the club want to keep the imposing striker ahead of the final 6 months of the season.
