Kirinyaga County Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri on Saturday confessed that the county is not ready to fight coronavirus pandemic.
He was speaking at Ndindiruku village in Mwea Sub-County during the funeral of Lucia Wanjiru Mugo, the mother to KPLC Engineer David Mwaniki.
Speaking after Kirinyaga county reported 20 cases, Ndambiri said the County had no funds and has been unable to put various preventive measures in place
Ndambiri said the region has not met the requisite 300-bed capacity and it will be a disaster should the number of Covid-19 cases increase.
Already 24 cases of the novel coronavirus have been reported in the region. Several other suspected cases are in quarantine.
According to Ndambiri, Kirinyaga County currently has 14 isolation beds at the Kerugoya Refferal Hospital- the biggest facility in the region.
He attributed the problem to the budget stalemate between Governor Anne Waiguru and the Kirinyaga ward representatives urging them to put the interests of the residents at heart.
He also confirmed that Difathas Health Centre was closed on Friday indefinitely after one case of COVID-19 was reported.
18 health workers at the facility are currently in isolation
