Cut-price wonderkid

Manchester City made a surprising move to sign Ferran Torres from Valencia.

The move appeared from out of nowhere and the fee was even more surprising. €23 million is all it took to take the Spaniard from the club who he developed from.

Speaking with Sky Sports ahead of Manchester City’s league opener against Wolves he said, “My objective is just to do as well as I can, to play as many games, score as many goals and provide as many assists as possible, and of course help the team win trophies.”

Torres joins a City side who have just seen Leroy Sane leave for Bayern Munich. Even with the German’s departure, Torres has a plethora of talent ahead of him.

Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Bernado Silva will be battling to prevent the Spaniard from taking their places.

Before I came here, I knew that there were a lot of players of a very high level,” he says. “But in the first training session, I saw that, wow, there is a lot of quality. I hope to be at that level soon.”

Valencian catastrophe

Barcelona have done Valencia some favours regarding taking headlines in La Liga.

Valencia have sold a whole host of players including the aforementioned Torres. He joined Rodrigo, Francis Coquelin and captain Dani Parejo out the exit door.

All four were starters for the east-coast club. Their positions have been filled by less than adequate replacements and the club are suffering because of it.

Coach Javi Gracia saw his side pick up an opening day Valencian derby win against Levante but the joy was short-lived. Celta Vigo, a side continuously embroiled in La Liga survival battles, put Valencia away on Saturday with a 2-1 win.

Gracia is yet to see any signings arrive through the Mestella doors which has caused further frustration for the Valencian fans. Top 4 is far from the ambition this season, survival hopes could soon appear on the agenda.
