Premier League giants Arsenal were this evening dealt a blow on the injury front, ahead of the club’s meeting with Newcastle United.

Mikel Arteta’s men are currently locked in action with Newcastle at the Emirates.

The clash marks the first in the respective sides’ 2020/21 FA Cup campaigns, with hosts Arsenal of course hopeful of getting the defence of their title off to a positive start.

It is the north Londoners, meanwhile, who entered the clash as clear favourites to advance, on the back of a much needed upturn in form of late.

A 4-0 drubbing of West Brom last weekend made it 3 straight Premier League wins, putting a frankly embarrassing stretch, which even saw the capital giants slip into the relegation battle, firmly behind them.

As such, Arsenal no doubt entered this evening’s exchanges with their tails up.

As outlined above, however, in the buildup to the clash, the Gunners were dealt an altogether concerning blow on the personnel front.

Mikel Arteta unsurprisingly opted to rotate his squad to face Newcastle, with the likes of Joe Willock, Cedric Soares and Nicolas Pepe handed rare chances to impress from the off:

Another of those to have been introduced to Arsenal’s XI this evening, meanwhile, was highly regarded Brazilian youngster Gabriel Martinelli.

After returning to fitness late last month, Martinelli was subsequently rested by Mikel Arteta last time out, having picked up a minor ankle problem.

With kick-off fast approaching at the Emirates, it therefore no doubt came as a major worry when Martinelli went to ground, once again clutching his ankle.

Images of the teenage attacker’s right foot catching in the turf subsequently surfaced online, with Martinelli, in the process, having seemingly jarred his ankle:

The Brazilian, in turn, was swiftly replaced in Arsenal’s starting line-up by Reiss Nelson, though the Gunners themselves have since assured that Martinelli’s withdrawal has come simply as ‘a precaution’:
