Jose Mourinho confirms Covid cases/Provides explanation for Dele Alli substitution following Everton defeat

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho this evening provided his take on the club’s disappointing opening day Premier League defeat to Everton.

DCL on target

The Lilywhites got their 2020/21 campaign underway a short time ago, in a meeting with Carlo Ancelotti’s rejuvenated outfit.

The Toffees have of course thoroughly impressed on the transfer front over the last couple of weeks, securing the high-profile additions of all of Allan, James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

And Everton’s new midfield trio went on to play a key role this afternoon, as the Merseysiders got their season off to the perfect start, at Spurs’ expense.

An impressive display on the part of the visitors in north London eventually saw a solitary goal prove enough to bag all 3 points.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the man on target, rising highest to drive home Lucas Digne’s pinpoint free-kick delivery 10 minutes after the interval:

‘I was expecting more’

For Tottenham, on the other hand, looking back on the club’s season opener, there appear more questions than answers.

The capital giants simply didn’t perform this evening, with new signings Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty, unlike their counterparts at Everton, having failed to make any significant impact.

As such, speaking to the media on the back of his side’s disappointing display, Jose Mourinho was inevitably drawn on what exactly went wrong versus the Toffees.

And the Portuguese tactician, whilst admitting that he ‘expected more’ from his players, was keen to highlight the issues stemming from this past summer’s shortened pre-season:

‘It was a difficult pre-season and I couldn’t expect them to be sharp and agile but I was expecting more from them individually and as a team.’

Mourinho also went on to reveal that unnamed members of his squad recently tested positive for Covid-19, forcing the individuals in question into self isolation, and further disrupting Spurs’ preparations for the new season:

‘We had cases of positive COVID-19. We’re not going to say who. We had players in quarantine due to proximity to players with COVID. We had a player in quarantine after going on holiday. It was a difficult pre-season.’

Finally, when drawn on Dele Alli’s withdrawal at half-time of today’s clash, the former Chelsea boss admitted that it came as a tactical decision, rather than a result of a fitness issue:
