President William Ruto stated that the interest of the East African Community is to find a lasting solution to the Democratic Republic of Congo conflict.
Ruto noted that the region cannot allow the situation to get worse than it is currently.
He added that this is the reason the region’s leaders have insisted on talking out the issues at hand in addition to calling for cessation of hostilities between involved parties.
In his words:
“It is in our interest as a region to find a lasting solution to the current instability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We cannot allow the situation to get worse. That is why we encourage dialogue and cessation of hostilities even as we push for a lasting solution.”
His remarks followed a meeting with regional leaders where the security situation in Eastern DRC was discussed.
Leaders present at the meeting included; Presidents Kaguta Museveni (Uganda), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Suluhu Samia (Tanzania), João Lourenço (Angola) and General Évariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi), alongside their delegations.
The meeting was held in Washington, D.C. in the United States of America on the sidelines of the US-Africa Leaders Summit.
The DRC peace talks are led by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta who is the region’s peace envoy.
