NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 31 – A 29-year-old woman suspected of stealing Sh2.2 million from her employer’s home has been arrested at her hideout in Malava, Kakamega County.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Nairobi Regional Headquarters, in collaboration with the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, traced the suspect using forensic leads.
Upon interrogation, she led officers to Kapsoi, Vihiga County, where Sh700,000 was recovered from her grandmother’s house. The operation then extended to Kipkaren, Uasin Gishu County, where detectives found three chain links purchased with the stolen money.
Further investigations took the team to South B’s Fuata Nyayo area in Nairobi, where an additional Sh800,000 was recovered from her rented house.
The probe was launched after the employer reported the theft, following a tip-off from her security guard, who saw the househelp leaving with a large carrier bag on March 16, 2025. The employer, who was running errands at the time, attempted to contact the househelp, only to find her phone switched off.
The suspect had allegedly told the guard she was delivering something for her boss. However, upon returning home, the employer discovered that the cash she had kept in her bedroom was missing.
“Sensing something was amiss, the employer rushed back home, only to find that the Sh2.2 million she had stored safely had vanished,” the DCI, led by Amin Mohammed, said in a statement.
The suspect is currently in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station, awaiting arraignment.
