NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 28 – Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka now says he is willing to meet with both President William Ruto and ODM Leader Raila Odinga. However, he the discussion will only focus on building consensus before the appointment of a new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a letter addressed to the two leaders, Kalonzo, who is a Principal in the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition, underscored the need to ensure the appointment of non-partisan electoral officials and agencies.
“For the avoidance of doubt, should the UDA/ODM Alliance proceed with the appointment of the IEBC chairperson and commissioners without the meaningful participation of the opposition, such an action will be viewed as an attempt to establish a partisan electoral body and pre-rig the next elections,” read the letter in part.
He cautioned both Ruto and Raila against moving forward with the appointment of the polling agency chairperson and the six designated commissioners.
The former Vice-President explained that these consultations were part of the agreements reached during the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) process.
Kalonzo argues that Raila’s ODM can no longer claim to be representing the opposition after they signed a partnership agreement in the ruling United Democratic Alliance on March 7,2025.
The IEBC selection panel, led by Nelson Makanda, is currently conducting interviews for the seven positions, which have remained vacant since January 2023.
The absence of a chairman and at least three commissioners has prevented the electoral body from executing key mandates, such as the long-overdue boundary delimitation and conducting at least five by-elections in various constituencies.
