Kevin De Bruyne enters contract negotiations with Manchester City with Belgian ‘happy’ at the club

De Bruyne happy

The Belgian midfielder has not had a prolific goalscoring start to the Premier League season and was out injured for a brief period but Manchester City’s will to tie down the 29-year-old is unwavering.

Speaking after Belgium’s 2-0 Nations League win over England, Kevin de Bruyne said he was ‘happy’ at City as Pep Guardiola’s side push for another league title.

“I am happy in Manchester,” De Bruyne said. “I am at a good club. Good owners. Good club. We are a bit in talks – not advanced. At the moment I am doing the talks myself. I would like to stay with the club, so it’s easy. If I didn’t want to stay, it would take someone to mediate. But when you want to stay, it’s not so difficult.”

Manchester City have not had the best start to their season dropping points against Leicester City, West Ham, Leeds united and Liverpool. City’s long-term goal of not only earning back the Premier League title but also winning the Champions League will forever burden the club. To achieve this, keeping players of De Bruyne’s quality is a priority.

Messi maybe?

With the news that Guardiola is edging closer to a new deal at Manchester City is it beyond the realms of possibility Lionel Messi could arrive at the Etihad?

Guardiola has said he is keen to remain with the club into the future and is not thinking about a move back to Barcelona.

“I would love to stay longer here,” said Guardiola. “It is a place I like to be but I have to deserve. This club achieved standards in the last decade but we have to extend that.”

“We have three days a game so we don’t have much time to think about it. I see every day Txiki and Ferran and I speak every week with Khaldoon. When it is going to happen, it is going to happen. It will not be a problem for the club.”

With the news that Guardiola looks to be staying and Messi’s contract at Barca finishing at the close of 2020/21, the Argentine could be swayed to reunite with his former Spanish coach.
