Leicester City 0-3 West Ham: Match Report / Leicester City devoid of creative spark / West Ham perfect

West Ham managed to pull off as a commanding display as Leicester City achieved at the Etihad a week prior. David Moyes’ men played a perfect counter-attacking game and kept a clean sheet with a cohesive back line.

Hammers’ Half

Leicester started the brighter of the two sides with the dynamic right-hand side of Timothy Castagne and Ayoze Perez looking to find incisive crosses into the box. Though the foxes created little of note and it would be punished.

Completely against the run of play West Ham took the lead in the 13th minute. Michail Antonio was taken down by Soyuncu on the right flank and the Hammers forward got up to switch the quick free-kick out to West Ham’s left.

The left-back Aaron Cresswell picked up the ball and swung a deep curling cross away from the Foxes goal for Antonio, who had sprinted into the box, to head across Kasper Schmeichel and into the bottom-left corner.

Leicester looked to find a quick leveller but again, the final ball was lacking. Vardy continued to try and make runs through the Hammers’ defensive line but was frustrated by the West Ham press blocking possible passing lanes.

The Hammers’ hard defensive work would again be rewarded by a surprising second goal. A long, high ball from Cresswell found Pablo Fornals who graciously brought it under control and then fired low past Schmeichel’s right.

Job done

Coufal was enjoying a spritely debut and set up an early chance in the second half for Antonio who headed straight into the welcoming arms of Schmeichel.

An injury to Daniel Amartey enabled Cengiz Under to come on and make his debut for Leicester City. Whilst enforced, the change meant Brendan Rodgers made a much needed switch of shape to a back four and a more offensive front line.

But this had little effect. Leicester continued to seem devoid of ideas. Whereas every time West ham came forward they looked dangerous. Declan Rice was incredibly unlucky not to have a lung-busting run rewarded with a goal. The England international smashing his shot against the bar on the 72nd minute.

But in the 83rd minute, West Ham wrapped up the game. Fornals and Bowen combining with the Spaniard playing the latter through and the former Hull wide man slotted past the helpless Dane.

Vardy summed up Leicester’s afternoon when through on goal late on and scooped his chipped effort wide of the Hammers post. There seemed to be a late consolation after brilliant combination play between Vardy and Harvey Barnes, however a VAR check cruelly ruled it out for offside.

The result means the Foxes suffer their first defeat and the absence of Dennis Praet was certainly noticeable. Rodgers will hope the Belgian returns quickly. West Ham meanwhile record a magical away win which will make David Moyes, self isolating at home, extremely happy.
