Recent speculation from Spain has suggested Lionel Messi could stay at Barcelona until 2023.
Messi to the MLS?
The transfer saga of this past summer, of course, surrounded Lionel Messi.
The Argentine, on the back of another disappointing Champions League campaign, set his sights on departing Barcelona by making use of a clause in his contract.
As we approach the midway point of the campaign, though, Messi’s future remains up in the air.
The veteran Argentine is primed to enter the final six months of his Barca contract, with no news of a possible extension having yet been forthcoming.
The latest comments on the part of Messi himself, meanwhile, will no doubt see the transfer speculation surrounding his name ramp back up over the weeks ahead.
This comes with the Blaugrana standout having hinted that he would be open to an MLS switch:
“I always said that I have the impression that I would like to enjoy the experience of living in the United States, of living in that league and that life, but if it happens or not I don’t know.”
Messi tipped to stay at Barcelona until 2023
Given his current deal is up in the summer, some may assume that Messi will depart Barca in 2021 and make any potential move to the MLS then.
However, recent word from Spain has suggested that will not be the case.
José Antonio Ponseti, who currently works for Cadena Ser, told El Larguero that he believes Messi will stay at the Camp Nou all the way until 2023 before linking up with David Beckham’s Inter Miami in 2023.
The reason for this is said to be so that his children will be able to go to high school in the USA before entering university:
“Messi wants to hold out in Barcelona and go to Miami in 2023, so his children would go to high school before entering university.”
