Liverpool confirm Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for Covid-19

Premier League champions Liverpool have this evening confirmed that midfielder Thiago Alcantara has returned a positive Covid-19 test.

Thiago in isolation

Jurgen Klopp’s men were of course in action on Monday night.

The Reds welcomed Arsenal to Anfield, for a Premier League clash.

And Liverpool, when all was said and done, emerged with all 3 points, on the back of a stellar performance.

First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Andy Robertson were followed by a late 3rd from summer arrival Diogo Jota, to keep the champions’ perfect start to the new season alive.

On a superb night all round for Liverpool, however, one concern came on the personnel front.

Upon the squad lists for the Anfield showdown being announced prior to kick-off, it became apparent that the hosts were set to take on Arsenal without the services of Thiago Alcantara.

At the time, a ‘minor fitness issue’ was cited as to why the Spaniard missed out.

As outlined above, however, Thiago’s absence in fact appears to have come for a very different reason.

In a post across the club’s social media platforms a short time ago, Liverpool confirmed that their gifted midfielder has tested positive for Covid-19.

Thiago is, as a result, set for a period in self-isolation:

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently self-isolating according to the necessary guidelines.

The 29-year-old, who missed Monday’s match against Arsenal, has exhibited minor symptoms of the virus but is in good health and is getting better.

The club has, and will continue to follow, all protocols relating to COVID-19 and Thiago will remain in self-isolation for the required period of time.

Reds back in action

Jurgen Klopp’s outit are set to return to action on Thursday night, in yet another meeting with Arsenal.

After making short work of Lincoln City last week, the Reds are set to welcome Mikel Arteta’s men to Anfield once again, in a League Cup 4th-round tie.
