Liverpool left ‘deeply unimpressed’ by misinformation spread over van Dijk injury

Reports have emerged this morning that Liverpool are not impressed by the coverage provided by beIN SPORTS following the club’s 2-2 draw in the Merseyside derby.

During the game, Virgil van Dijk was subjected to a serious challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The incident left the Dutch defender clutching his knee, though he managed to walk off the field of play without assistance.

This would have led many to believe the issue not too serious. However, after beIN SPORTS presenter Richard Keys delivered information to viewers that van Dijk could be sidelined for 7-8 months, panic set in.

With the former Southampton man such an integral figure for Liverpool, any information regarding a lengthy absence was always likely to cause hysteria. The Reds have looked shaky without goalkeeper Alisson of late, meaning any further key absentees would prove hugely detrimental.

Not happy

Despite the news circulating regarding the Dutch defender, however, Liverpool are yet to confirm the extent of the injury. Furthermore, the club are said to be unhappy with claims of a long-term injury surfacing despite no scans having, at the time, taken place.

After the game, Jurgen Klopp was asked about the wellbeing of his defender, but remained coy:

“I don’t know [how serious it is], I don’t know, but it is not good,” the German said.

“Virgil played for us I don’t know how many games in a row. He plays with pain, he plays with pretty much everything, but he couldn’t play on. That’s not good.”

Liverpool have upcoming Champions League responsibilities. In addition, a title bout between the Merseyside club and Manchester City is set for the 7th of November. Whether or not van Dijk’s injury is as serious as first feared, a return within a month appears unlikely.
