Liverpool ‘monitoring’ Ajax defender Perr Schuurs/Souness tips Jota to replace Firmino

Jota rescues Liverpool vs West Ham

Liverpool played host to West Ham on Saturday evening, aiming to continue their unbeaten run.

After a shock 7-2 drubbing vs Aston Villa, the Reds had since gone unbeaten in five matches across all competitions.

Liverpool didn’t look overly spectacular across these outings, but nevertheless managed to get the job done.

And it was a similar story on Saturday. After going 1-0 down, Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled to break down the Hammers, before a Mohamed Salah penalty, followed by a late Diogo Jota strike, saw Liverpool come away with a crucial three points.

Jota’s winner came as his third league goal of the campaign across just five outings, and the second to have played a key role in Liverpool securing a win.

And, following his latest positive display on Saturday, Graeme Souness voiced the opinion that Jota could soon replace Roberto Firmino in Liverpool’s starting line-up:

“I would imagine pretty quickly he will be challenging Firmino for a starting spot.

“Why not? He’s got goals, he got a goal in what every three games at Wolves. And now he’s in a better team so that should improve. I like him a lot, 23 years old, he can only do better.”

Liverpool linked with Ajax defender

Elsewhere on the Liverpool front, the Merseyside powerhouse have been linked with a central defender.

With Virgil van Dijk sidelined long-term, and Joel Matip still struggling for fitness, Jurgen Klopp has had to call upon Fabinho and Nathaniel Phillips to fill his side’s void at centre-half of late.

And though both have done decent jobs, Liverpool should really be looking to bring in some fresh legs at the heart of their defence.

The latest centre-half to be linked with the Premier League champions is Perr Schuurs.

The 20-year-old has featured eight times for Ajax this season – including in the Champions League vs Liverpool.

And, on the back of his solid showing vs the Reds, the Mirror have since claimed that Klopp and co. are monitoring the stopper, who has just under two years left on his current contract.
