Lucas Torreira reportedly set to join Atletico Madrid on loan/ Spanish outfit ‘convinced’ Thomas Partey will stay put

Several reports from the media on Thursday suggest Lucas Torreira is closing on a loan move to Atletico Madrid.

Torreira out of favour

Lucas Torreira joined Arsenal in the summer of 2018 from Serie A outfit, Sampdoria.

The Gunners are understood to have paid around £25m to land the Uruguayan.

Torreira then went on to cement himself as a fairly regular feature under Unai Emery.

However, since Mikel Arteta took the reins at the Emirates, Torreira has seen his playing time reduced dramatically.

The Spaniard often opts for a three-back formation, which requires just two central midfielders.

And with Arsenal having secured Dani Ceballos’ services for another season as well as welcoming back Mohamed Elneny from his loan in Turkey, Torreira once again looks set to be quite a way down Arteta’s midfield pecking order.

In fact, the 24-year-old is yet to register a single minute of first-team action this term.

Torreira to Atletico

As a result, the obvious option would be for the north Londoners to look at moving Torreira on before the close of the current window on October 5th.

Atletico Madrid have long been linked with the aggressive midfielder, with Arsenal fans no doubt hoping that should the Spanish powerhouse sign Torreira, then that would allow Thomas Partey to move in the opposite direction.

However, reports surrounding Torreira on Thursday hint that will not be the case.

First, Goal claim that Torreira has agreed to spend the season on loan at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Said transfer will reportedly included an option to buy next summer, but with Partey said to have a release clause of around €50m, moving Torreira out on loan now doesn’t really help Arteta and co. raise funds to land the African.

The reliable Fabrizio Romano has also picked up the Torreira story on Thursday, also mentioning a loan with option to buy.

Crucially though, Romano went on to state that Atletico are conceived Partey will be staying put:
