Man United ‘planning offensive’ for Villarreal defender Pau Torres

A recent report from Spain has linked Manchester United with Villarreal defender Pau Torres.

Man United eyeing left-footed defender?

Manchester United have certainly looked much improved in recent months.

Since Bruno Fernandes’ January arrival, the Red Devils’ form has taken a dramatic up-turn.

United are unbeaten in the Premier League since January, and would finish the campaign 3rd.

However, it’s quite obvious that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are still some way from competing with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, the latter of whom they finished 33 points behind in the English top-flight table.

One area in which Man United need to strengthen to become title challengers again is at centre-back.

Harry Maguire was a decent buy, even if his fee was a bit steep. But outside of the Englishman, United don’t have an awful lot of quality.

The Manchester powerhouse are seemingly well aware of this, though, with it having been reported back in May that they are open to adding a centre-back in the summer due to doubts over Victor Lindelof.

There were then, of course, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s post-match comments regarding Nathan Ake earlier this month, which some interpreted as:

“We need a left-footed centre-back, keep going.”

Pau Torres linked with Man United

So, Man United’s aforementioned links to Pau Torres do make a fair bit of sense.

The 23-year-old Spaniard is indeed left-footed, and impressed for Villarreal this season, en route to a 5th-placed La Liga finish.

As such, according to Sport Witness, citing Mundo Deportivo, United want to sign Torres in the summer, and ‘plan an offensive’ for him.

Barcelona are also understood to be fans of Torres, but with Villarreal believed to be demanding a fee of €65m for their stopper, it is hard to envision the Catalan outfit, who are in something of a financial mess, being able to afford a deal.

Manchester City have also previously been linked with Torres. And whilst one would assume that City would be able to rival United for the stopper, the Sky Blues now look to be closing in another left-footed defender, Nathan Ake, likely bringing to an end any interest they had in Torres.
