Man United reportedly not willing to give Pogba bumper pay rise to keep him at Old Trafford

Pogba’s up and down Man United stint

It’s fair to say that Paul Pogba’s second stint at Manchester United has had its ups and downs.

The Frenchman, who arrived for a club-record £89m from Juventus, has, for the most part, been an extremely frustrating figure to watch when donning the colours of the Manchester powerhouse.

The World Cup winner has shown that, on his day, he is one of the top central midfielders in European football.

However, it is getting Pogba to produce such impressive displays on a consistent basis that has proven the problem.

Pogba’s poor relationship with former Reds boss Jose Mourinho was no secret, with the Portuguese tactician, at one point, having branded the midfielder a virus.

So, when Mourinho was replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Pogba, in turn, began playing some superb football, United fans no doubt hoped that they were set to see the best of their mercurial Frenchman on a weekly basis.

However, the former Juventus star’s form once again dipped off towards the back end of 2018/19, and injuries limited Pogba’s involvement for much of this past season.

Such inconsistencies, coupled with a rather poor relationship with some sections of the club’s fans, inevitably resulted in speculation that Pogba’s days at United were numbered, with Real Madrid and Juventus the sides most persistently tipped as potential landing spots.

New deal for Pogba?

However, when the Premier League restarted in June, Pogba had once again experienced an upturn in form.

Very little was also made of the Frenchman’s previously links to Real Madrid over the summer.

But it would be Pogba himself who would reignite said links earlier this month, stating that moving to Real would be a dream move.

Of course, Pogba still has just under two years left on his current United contract, and recent reports do suggest United would like to open contract talks with the former Juventus star.

However, it doesn’t sound as though Pogba should be expecting a huge new deal if he chooses to continue plying his trade in Manchester.

ESPN recently reported that United are indeed keen toe extend Pogba’s stay with a fresh long-term deal.

However, it is added that any deal would need to be a reasonable offer, with the Red Devils already said to have warned the midfielder they are not willing to give him a bumper pay rise.
