Man United ‘set to make move’ for Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano next summer

Speculation stemming from the English media on Tuesday suggests that Manchester United have set their sights firmly on a swoop for Dayot Upamecano.

Leipzig stint

Upamecano, a 22-year-old central-defender, has emerged as one of German football’s standout performers over the last couple of seasons.

On the back of an impressive stint in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg, sister club Leipzig snapped him up in January of 2017.

And the stopper, despite his tender years, has since gone on to establish himself as an absolutely integral member of the Bundesliga giants’ backline.

Upamecano has long been hailed for his defensive traits, with the French international combining a superb reading of the game, ability in the tackle and pace to burn, all wrapped up in an impressive physical stature.

Last season saw the youngster rack up 38 appearances across all competitions, including 8 in the Champions League, as Leipzig shocked the masses en route to the competition’s semi-finals.

The early weeks of the new campaign, meanwhile, have seen both Upamecano and Leipzig continue to impress, with Julian Nagelsmann’s outfit currently sitting pretty atop the Bundesliga table.

Old Trafford bound?

Upamecano’s stellar form, however, has also resulted in inevitable speculation that he could soon be on the move.

This past summer saw a host of top clubs tipped to swoop for the Frenchman, with the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United all named as interested parties.

And, as outlined above, the latter of these sides now appear primed to reignite their pursuit.

As per a report from the reliable Paul Hirst of the Times, United remain extremely keen on the 22-year-old’s signature.

This comes with the Red Devils having of course endured an altogether hit-and-miss opening to the campaign, during which the club’s backline has often looked far from assured.

Upamecano appears to be viewed as a potential solution to such woes, with Hirst going as far as to claim that the Premier League giants ‘are set to make a move’ next summer.

A bargain deal, meanwhile, could even be in the offing:

‘Upamecano’s new contract with the Bundesliga club is understood to contain a release clause — said to be worth as little as £38 million — that will become active in next year’s summer transfer window.’
