Man United ‘sweating over fitness’ of centre-back pairing Maguire & Lindelof ahead of West Brom

Word stemming from the English media on Thursday suggests that Manchester United defenders Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof could both miss the club’s meeting with West Bromwich Albion this weekend.

United host West Brom

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are set to return to action on Saturday night, when they welcome the Baggies to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils will of course head into proceedings on the back of an altogether underwhelming opening to the campaign, particularly on the domestic front.

Despite having bagged thoroughly impressive Champions League wins over the likes of PSG and RB Leipzig, United have fallen to defeat in 3 of the club’s Premier League outings thus far, including embarrassing losses at the hands of Crystal Palace and Tottenham.

Such form means that, ahead of this weekend’s latest round of fixtures, the Reds sit in a lowly 14th in the English top-flight.

West Brom, though, have not exactly fared much better.

In fact, with 8 games on the board, the struggling Baggies have racked up just 3 points, without a single victory to their name.

Defensive concerns

As such, having gotten things back on track to at least some degree with a 3-point haul at Everton in their last outing prior to the international break, Manchester United will no doubt be hopeful of making it two wins from two this weekend.

As outlined above, though, the Red Devils may be forced to do so without the services of a pair of key players.

The individuals in question? Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

As per a report from the reliable Rob Dawson of ESPN, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ‘sweating’ over the fitness of his two first-choice central defenders.

Captain Maguire, despite having managed to see out the full 90 minutes as England downed Iceland on Wednesday, is said to have since complained of bruising on his foot.

The former Leicester City man will therefore be assessed upon his return to Carrington later today.

Regarding Lindelof, meanwhile, it is claimed that the medical team at Old Trafford are becoming ‘increasingly concerned’ by a back injury hampering the Swede.

Lindelof has played through the pain for much of the season thus far, but was forced off during the 2nd-half of his country’s defeat to France on Tuesday.

In turn, the stopper, like Maguire, is now viewed as a doubt to feature versus West Brom.
