Mendy completes Chelsea move/Havertz admits to difficult start with Blues

Mendy joins Chelsea

The news Chelsea fans have been waiting for finally arrived on Thursday. Edouard Mendy is a Chelsea player.

The Senegalese shot-stopper has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with his new club, who he is believed to have set back £22m.

Mendy only joined his previous club, Rennes, last summer. But the 28-year-old went on to enjoy a superb debut campaign with the French outfit.

Granted, the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season was cut short, but Mendy nevertheless played a key role in Rennes’ boasting of the joint-best defensive record in the French top-flight, alongside champions PSG.

As a result, the Chelsea faithful will no doubt be keen to see Mendy come in between the sticks on a more regular basis than Kepa.

The Spaniard had an awful 2019/20, with his poor form continuing into the current campaign.

Havertz on tough start

Elsewhere on the Chelsea front, Kai Havertz has been discussing his stint in England so far.

The German was, of course, Chelsea’s most expensive signing of the summer. But he did have a rather average start to life in the Premier League.

However, Havertz would start for the Blues in the League Cup on Wednesday, netting a hat-trick vs Championship outfit Barnsley.

It would be after this tie that Havertz admitted to having a difficult start with Chelsea, though he would add that the Barnsley clash gave him more confidence and he hopes to continue that form into the league on Saturday:

“I think the first two matches were very difficult for me because I didn’t have the pre-season – I only trained one week with the team – but I think that step by step I will be fitter and this match was very good for me, to get more confidence.

“I hope to continue on Saturday like that.”
