Messi misses out of Spanish Super Cup Semi through injury as Barcelona sweat over extent of Argentine’s fitness.
Messi thought to be fit
Lionel Messi has not been selected for tonight’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final for Barcelona. The Argentinian was substituted in the second half against Granada after feeling a slight hamstring problem. However it was thought he would be fit to play in the Super Cup tie against Real Sociedad.
Ahead of the match, Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman confirmed that there was ‘discomfort’ in the 34-year old, however said that the player would be ‘available.’
“There are several players with discomfort, one of them is Messi, that is why we withdrew him in Granada,” Koeman said the day before the game.
“It seems that everyone is available for tomorrow, also Araujo, although a preparatory session is missing. It is a match against a strong team and we can take the next step.”
Many believe that it would be silly to risk playing the Argentine and La Liga TV’s Andy West was forthright in putting this point across on social media.
“Messi absolutely should not play in the Super Cup if he has any physical issues at all, and I’m also concerned about Pedri. He’s undertaken an enormous amount of work for a teenager who is still growing into his body. Recipe for an injury. Rest him please,” he said.

Messi does not play
As the announcement for the line-up of Barcelona was announced, it was a surprise to see that Messi was not included among the players. He was not even a substitute, with either Koeman wanting to avoid all risk of further injury or the affliction to the Argentine being much worse than initially thought.

Fortunately for Barcelona, there is plenty of time after the completion of the semi-final for the Argentine to recover from whatever issue he has. Barca take on Cornella, who knocked out Atletico Madrid from the Copa Del Rey, on Thursday the 21st January before returning to La Liga against Elche just 3 days later.
