Morocco Maintains Leading Position in 2020 Africa Innovation Week

Rabat – Morocco has held the lead in the first five weeks of the 2020 Innovation Week in Africa (IWA), with 54 awards and 105 certifications.

According to OFEED, a Moroccan science school and the organizer of the event, Brazil and Lebanon follow Morocco with 39 and 36 awards, respectively. Lebanon comes second in the “Masters of Innovation certificates” category with 101 innovations, while Iran raks third with 27.

IWA 2020 kicked off on September 8 and will continue through December 19, and is set to announce prize winners after each week of the competition.

The event is taking place remotely in Morocco under the patronage of the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA).

Since the innovation event started, 13 participating countries have received a total of 179 awards, including Morocco, Brazil, Switzerland, the US, Sri Lanka, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Senegal, and Benin.

The awards include “Outstanding International Achievements,” the “Special Contribution” prize, and Grand Prize Semi Prize, as well as Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

The Moroccan School of Engineering Sciences (EMSI) won the Grand Prix and four gold medals in the second week of the event for delivering four inventions related to hydropower, hospital management, micro-wind turbines, and sanitization.

EMSI’s innovation also manifested during the COVID-19 pandemic in Morocco, during which the school launched the competition “Covid Challenge.” The competition helped contribute to national efforts in search of innovative solutions to face the challenges of the health crisis.

Minister of Industry Moulay Hafid Elalamy said that the COVID-19 pandemic has offered Morocco an opportunity to demonstrate the innovation capacities of its people.

During a virtual conference organized by the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) last month, Elalamy said “the African continent is a veritable storehouse of natural resources and a reservoir of skills and senior technicians.”
