Mourinho: Tottenham only needed a couple more matches to earn top-four spot

Crystal Palace vs Tottenham

Tottenham’s rather up and down 2019/20 campaign draws to a close at Selhurst Park today.

You can find out how to watch the clash here.

Said game is of little importance to Crystal Palace as they are already safe and unable to qualify for Europe thanks to some pretty dismal form since the restart.

Tottenham, on the other hand, will be desperate to pick up three points.

The Lilywhites are currently 7th in the league, which isn’t a guaranteed Europa League spot at the moment. Plus, Spurs also have Sheffield United hot on their heels.

Mourinho on top-four spot

But based on the two sides recent displays, you would imagine this clash will be an easy three points picked up for Jose Mourinho and co.

One man who is probably of the same opinion is the Portuguese tactician himself.

Speaking in a recent interview with Spurs’ official website, Mourinho was discussing the top-four, an area Tottenham currently sit five points behind.

But despite the fairly big gap between themselves and Chelsea, Mourinho voiced the opinion that his side only needed a few more matches to fill the top-four:

“If I take the focus a little bit away and I look to the global picture.

“I look at it with the feeling that we should have a couple more matches to play, because the team is in a good moment, it’s strong, has no injuries.

“And my feeling is in normal conditions we would fill top four without problems, and probably we didn’t need much more than a couple more matches to do that.”

But whilst Mourinho’s ‘couple more matches’ claim may be a bit off, it is worth pointing out that Tottenham would actually be 4th if the campaign started when Mourinho took the reins – a stat that will no doubt please the north London faithful ahead of 2020/21.
