Sharp makes the difference

The fury on the part of the Magpies faithful of course comes on the back of their side’s latest outing coming to a close a short time ago.

Bruce’s men made the trip to Selhurst Park, for a meeting with Premier League basement dwellers Sheffield United.

The Blades’ dismal form to this point in the campaign had long stood as something of a running joke amongst rival fans, with Chris Wilder’s outfit, just a year on from taking the English top-flight by storm, having failed to secure a win from their opening 17 fixtures.

When all was said and done in Sheffield this evening, however, United finally, finally managed to bring their record-breaking stretch to an end.

A hard-fought 90 minutes saw the hosts completely dominate the ball, before eventually being rewarded for their efforts with the game’s first and only goal 20 minutes from time.

After Federico Fernandez was adjudged to have handled the ball in the Newcastle area, Billy Sharp stepped up to slot the ensuing spot-kick beyond Karl Darlow in the visitors’ net, securing a historic victory in the process.

Bruce targeted

Whilst this evening’s result will no doubt be viewed by Sheffield United as a springboard towards an unlikely push out of the Premier League relegation zone, however, at Newcastle, the situation looks considerably more gloomy.

In truth, their eventual defeat to a side regarded as one of the worst in English top-flight history did not even prove the most concerning takeaway from the 90 minutes at Bramall Lane.

Instead, it was the manner in which they performed.

The Magpies were frankly dominated tonight, with Sheffield United having secured 67% of the possession over the course of the clash, as well as racking up ten more shots than their struggling opponents.

In turn, on the back of proceedings coming to a close, it has since come as little surprise to see one individual in particular feel the widespread wrath of the Newcastle faithful.

The individual in question? Steve Bruce.

Fans of the Geordie outfit have taken to social media in their droves tonight, to demand that their side’s boss be removed from his position at the earliest opportunity:
