The Action People’s Party has criticised the silence of key security figures, including the National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu, and the Department of State Services (DSS), regarding the recent explosive incident during a protest in Port Harcourt. The protest, organised by supporters of Minister Nyesom Wike, resulted in one death and several injuries.

At a press briefing, Action People’s Party representative Comrade Anderson Achilike condemned the lack of response from the security agencies, suggesting it tarnishes the reputation of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He emphasised that while Governor Sim Fubara serves as the chief security officer of Rivers State, the power to command federal security bodies lies solely with President Tinubu.

“As an opposition party, we are alarmed by the ongoing silence from the NSA, IGP, CP, and DSS since Tuesday’s incident, where supporters of the FCT Minister allegedly detonated an explosive device, causing fatalities and injuries,” Achilike stated.

He added, “While we typically avoid intervening in conflicts between the ruling APC and the main opposition PDP, our role as a vibrant opposition compels us to hold the government accountable. The inaction of these security agencies emboldens Wike’s supporters and reflects poorly on the Tinubu administration, portraying it as indifferent to the security and welfare of Nigerians.”

The Action People’s Party urged President Tinubu to fulfil his constitutional obligation to protect citizens, stating, “The President must instruct his security chiefs to secure Rivers State and bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice. Swift action is essential to preserve his image as a leader committed to safeguarding lives.”
