‘Nobody is giving up on Kepa’: Petr Cech hints Spaniard still has future at Chelsea

Petr Cech, now technical and performance advisor at Chelsea, has recently hinted that Kepa will be staying put at Stamford Bridge for the time being.

Chelsea eyeing new goalkeeper

Said comments come on the back of months of speculation that Chelsea are eyeing a new goalkeeper.

Two of the shot-stoppers most persistently linked with a move to Stamford Bridge have been Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and Ajax’s Andre Onana – though those links do look to have died down in recent weeks.

Manchester United youngster Dean Henderson had even been named a potential target of the Blues, though the 23-year-old has since agreed a new five-year deal with the Red Devils.

However, Chelsea’s search for reinforcements between the sticks does not appear to have halted.

In fact, the Londoners appear to be very keen to land Rennes’ Edouard Mendy.

As we recently covered, Chelsea are understood to have had a £15m bid rejected for Mendy early last week, but they have since come back in with a fresh bid believed to be around £18m.

Cech on Kepa

With so many links to new goalkeepers, you would be forgiven for thinking Chelsea were keen to ship Kepa off as soon as possible.

After all, they did pay a world-record  £71m for the Spaniard, whose displays, especially last season, were pretty awful.

However, when speaking about Kepa recently, Chelsea legend Petr Cech seemed to hint Kepa still had a future at the club, stating that nobody is giving up on him and everyone hopes he has a great future.

Cech did, however, also concede that discussions about potentially adding a new keeper are underway:

“Kepa struggled last season, that is unquestionable.

“But the club invested in him and gave him a long-term contract because they believe he has the qualities and attributes to be successful.

“Additions will be made to the squad, perhaps even in goal, and this is what is being discussed now.

“But nobody is giving up on Kepa and we all hope he has a great future.”

Should Mendy or any other keeper sign, it appears Chelsea, as reported by the Telegraph back in July, could be set to bring a fresh face in to add more pressure to Kepa and challenge him regularly for the no.1 spot.
