Rift valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya has issued a stern warning to politicians against inciting the public, saying they will be barred from vying in 2022.

He said those found culpable will watch the unfolding politics on television from their prison cells.

He was speaking in Tiamamut on Saturday when he presided over a peace meeting that brought together leaders and residents from Isiolo and Laikipia counties.

The two regions have been mired in conflicts over a border which was made worse by regular cattle rustling incidents.

During the meeting, Natembeya said leaders who make statements likely to spur ethnic animosity will be locked up before the campaigns begin.

Tension has been brewing among the Maasai community from Laikipia and their Samburu counterparts from Isiolo over cattle rustling and border dispute.

The administrator said that border issues are not supposed to cause conflicts among Kenyans who have lived together for ages, insisting that the round of conflicts indicated that politics was at play.

Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo who was at the same event challenged local leaders to call their people out when they are on the wrong.

She explained that would be the only way to ensure communities live together peacefully even after their leaders depart.

Dullo also called upon the regional security team to conduct an audit on the firearms being used by the National Police reservists, arguing that the guns are being used wrongly by the two communities against each other

Laikipia Senator John Kinyua reiterated that the Maasai from Laikipia had suffered several raids from their Isiolo counterparts, calling for an anti-stock theft police unit camp to be established in the area to aid in the recovery of their livestock when the raids happen.
