Changed fortunes

Aaron Ramsey has had an indifferent period at Juventus since his free transfer from Arsenal. The Welshman failed to agree a new contract with the Gunners and instead opted to join up with Cristiano Ronaldo and Juve in Turin.

The Welsh international played 24 league game  in his debut season for The Old Lady. However, he managed just over 1000 minutes on the pitch scoring three times.

Positionally, Ramsey has always wanted to play in an attacking midfield role behind the main striker(s). However, Paulo Dybala used as a centre-forward with a defensive midfield 3 meant Ramsey was often limited to the box-to-box style central-midfield role he had been used to at Arsenal.

When playing for Wales, Ramsey was often given the free attacking midfield role which led to impressive displays at the 2016 European Championships.

The start of the Serie A season has seen Ramsey start both games in a more forward-role. Ronaldo has featured more centrally and the Welshman has seen the more attacking role suit his style. Setting up Ronaldo for Juve’s 3rd against Sampdoria on the opening day.

Fit and ready

Due to the COVID-19 bubble Juventus were involved with, Ramsey was unable to feature in Wales’ friendly against England. However, manager Ryan Giggs said Ramsey would be available and starts for Wales.

“Aaron’s trained all week with Juve and joined up with us in Dublin yesterday,” Giggs remarked.

“He’s fit to play, he’s in good shape and Aaron has got that something different which can unlock defences.”

Wales are currently top of their group with 2 wins from 2 games. Meanwhile, the Republic of Ireland side has only one point from their two fixtures and they will be very keen to pick up their first win.

The Republic of Ireland parted ways with Mick McCarthy and Stephen Kenney was promoted from the under-21 setup. Having never coached Outside of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland, Kenney has been thrown in the deep end.
