SA records 2 646 new COVID-19 cases, 86 deaths

South Africa has recorded 2 646 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the national positive total to 765 409. Gauteng still has for the most cases provincially, accounting for 30.4% (232 856) of total cases.

Eighty-six new deaths have been recorded, with the Eastern Cape accounting for the bulk of the fatalities with 58.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says a total of 20 845 deaths have now been recorded in South Africa.

“Regrettably, 86 more COVID-19 related deaths have been reported: Eastern Cape 58, Free State 17, KwaZulu-Natal two and Western Cape nine. This brings the total to 20 845 deaths. Of the 86 deaths, 22 reportedly occurred in the past 48 hours: 13 in Eastern Cape, one in KwaZulu-Natal and eight in Western Cape.”

Tests and recoveries

South Africa has conducted 5 269 062 total tests, with 26 007 of those tests conducted in the last 24-hour cycle.

The private sector accounts for 58% (3 050 205) of total tests, while the public sector accounts for 42% (2 218 857).

The recovery rate is at 92.5%.
