Saint-Etienne blame Arsenal for William Saliba not being able to return on loan

Saliba returns to Arsenal

Arsenal procured William Saliba’s services in the summer of 2019.

However, the centre-back then loaned back to his previous club, Saint-Etienne, for the duration of the 2019/20 campaign.

Saliba then returned to north London over the summer and there was an expectation that, despite his tender years, the 19-year-old would be a fairly regular feature for Mikel Arteta’s side.

However, since returning to England, Saliba has failed to make a single senior appearance for the Gunners, even in the League Cup.

Saliba staying put

This did suggest, for now at least, that Saliba wasn’t too high up Arsenal’s centre-back pecking order, with Arteta himself recently trying to explain how the north Londoners are just aiming to do what is best for the stopper’s development.

What did look set to be best for the Frenchman’s progress was some form of loan move.

And on deadline day, Premier League outfit Fulham were linked with such a move.

However, no move of any sort materialised for Saliba, who now looks a lot more likely to be spending at least the next few months on Arsenal’s books.

As well as Fulham, though, it seems as though Saint-Etienne were keen on seeing their former defender return.

But after missing out on a loan move for Saliba, the French outfit have moved to hit out at Arsenal somewhat:

“Long before the transfer window closed, AS Saint-Etienne had reached an agreement with William Saliba and accepted Arsenal’s offer for a one-season loan.

“Unfortunately, all the administrative conditions could not be met in time, in England, for the completion of the deal.

“The disappointment is great for ASSE and William Saliba, who was particularly determined to return to a club where he has flourished.”
