SA’s COVID-19 death toll surpasses 20 000 mark


South Africa has recorded 2 140 new coronavirus cases, taking the total number of cases to date to 742 394. The country has also recorded 60 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Wednesday.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Eastern Cape.

“Regrettably, we report 60 more COVID-19 related deaths: 24 from Eastern Cape, 19 from the Free State, 2 from Gauteng, 1 from KwaZulu-Natal, 2 from Mpumalanga, 2 from the North West, 6 from the Northern Cape and 4 from the Western Cape,” says Dr Mkhize. This brings the total number of deaths to 20 011.

The cumulative number of tests conducted to date is 5 037 782.

Recoveries now stand at 686 458 which translates to a recovery rate of 92%.
