Sergio Reguilon reportedly leaning towards Sevilla return over Man United

The latest word stemming from the Spanish media this weekend suggests that Sevilla are edging out Manchester United in the race for Sergio Reguilon’s signature.

Sevilla standout

The future of Spanish stopper Reguilon has been throw up in the air once again of late.

The 23-year-old, a product of Real Madrid’s youth system, spent last season out on loan at Sevilla.

And, during his spell at the the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, Reguilon once again proved himself to be one of La Liga’s standout left-backs.

The Madrid native played a crucial role in the superb campaign enjoyed by Julen Lopetegui’s men, racking up 3 goals and 5 assists across 38 appearances, en route to Europa League glory and a 4th-place La Liga finish.

Sevilla return?

As such, at most clubs, Reguilon would of course now be expected to return to battle it out for a starting berth over the course of the season ahead.

The problem for the Spaniard, however, is that Zinedine Zidane currently has both Ferland Mendy and Marcelo to choose from for the left-hand side of his Real Madrid backline.

In turn, this situation has resulted in the widespread assumption that Reguilon will be on the move once again this summer.

A whole host of clubs have been named as suitors of the all-action stopper in the media, with the likes of Napoli, Chelsea, Everton, and Tottenham all thought to be keen.

The two outfits most heavily linked of late, though, have been Manchester United and Sevilla.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano last week even went as far as to claim that the Red Devils had been offered the chance to sign Reguilon:

But, as outlined above, if the latest media speculation in Spain is to be believed, then it in fact appears to be Sevilla who have established front-runner status.

As per a report from AS, Reguilon is currently torn between an Old Trafford switch, and a return to Andalusia.

It is the latter, though, at present, which appear the stopper’s more likely destination.

This comes for one key reason: the terms of the transfer on offer.

Sevilla are said to be keen to bring Reguilon back to the club on loan, whereas Manchester United would rather a permanent deal.

With the 23-year-old himself holding out hope of carving out an extended future for himself with parent club Real Madrid, a temporary departure from the Bernabeu for the 2020/21 campaign therefore obviously represents the more attractive option.
