The hope of former Nigeria’s Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr returning to the African Cup of Nations on his first attempt after leaving Nigeria has become a mirage.

The Franco-German gaffer led Super Eagles to the Third place finish in 2019 before leaving in 2021.

His new team Cheetah of Benin Republic faced the Mambas of Mozambique on Saturday in Maputo in a game they must win to qualify but lost 3-2 at the end.

Mounie put Benin ahead earlier in the game from the penalty spot but the host scored twice before the halftime.

The away side equalised again earlier in the second half to make it 2-2 but Mozambique left it late to score the 3rd goal and won the game 3-2.

Mozambique returned to the biennial competition for the first time since 2010.
