The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup preparations of Australia got a big lift as their star midfielder Carpenter Ellie returned to action.

Ellie suffered a severe injury in 2022 during a club engagement and has to undergo surgery to correct the wound.

She has been going through rehabilitation in France with Olympique Lyon’s Feminine side.

Ellie was recalled back into the squad for the friendly that Australia will play against Scotland.

“After my injury, I’ve had some good months here with Lyon building my match fitness, so I feel ready to put back on the green and gold and play at the international level. I’m very excited to be back on the team and to see everyone again after such a long time.

“It’s a World Cup year. That was a massive motivation for me throughout my injury, to keep thinking that there is such a big goal at the end of this. I want to be there with the team to help achieve our goals.

“It’s such a competitive team at the moment and I’m just really excited to get back in and start working with everyone”, she said.

Apart from Nigeria, Canada and the Republic of Ireland are the two other teams Australia will face.
