With preparations underway for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved significant changes to the football tournaments.
On Thursday, the IOC confirmed that the football competition will feature 16 women’s teams and 12 men’s teams, marking a notable expansion of the women’s tournament.
This change underscores the joint commitment of FIFA, the IOC, and the LA28 organizing committee to elevate women’s sports and highlight the growing strength of women’s football on the global stage.
“FIFA has always believed in the power of women’s football, and today’s decision by the IOC Executive Board is a positive step,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
“Our vision is clear: we are investing in and expanding opportunities for women’s football at every level. More teams on the Olympic stage means more role models, more inspiration, and more impact.”
He added, “This development reflects our shared understanding that women’s football deserves greater representation and visibility at the Olympic Games.
We thank the IOC for the productive discussions that will help make LA28 a landmark event. We also look forward to continued collaboration to potentially include futsal and beach soccer in future Olympic programs.”
Nigeria remains one of the few countries to have earned all Olympic football medals in the men’s category, with Gold in 1996, Silver in 2008.
