Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen salvaged a point for his team with a late header in their 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in Abidjan on Thursday.

The match, part of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign, saw Benin take the lead early in the 16th minute when Mohamed Tijani capitalised on a defensive lapse by Nigeria to score.

Despite multiple attempts from both sides, Benin held onto their advantage for much of the game. However, in the 81st minute, Osimhen responded with a powerful header from a well-delivered cross to level the score.

This draw came after Nigeria had already secured their place in the 2025 AFCON, following Libya’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda earlier that day.

With 11 points from five matches, the Super Eagles top their qualification group.

The goal also was a huge milestone for Osimhen, who tied Segun Odegbami’s 23-goal record, becoming Nigeria’s joint second all-time top scorer.

Osimhen reached this feat in 37 appearances, compared to Odegbami’s 46.

Victor Osimhen was voted the player of the match after his outstanding performance against Benin.

The 25-year-old made an impact as he netted a brilliant goal which saw the Super Eagles escape a narrow defeat against Benin.
