The preparations of African champions Bayana Bayana of South Africa suffered a big blow on Tuesday as the team skipper Janine Van Wyk is ruled out of the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The team coach Desiree Ellis broke the sad news on Tuesday during a press conference organized for the unveiling of the 36 provisional lists of players.
“I have sustained an injury that I feel would impact my chances of performing at the highest level that is required to make the World Cup squad.
“I have to turn down the call-up with a heavy heart, but also knowing that I am doing what is best for the team”, Van Wyk said.
Van Wyk is two matches away from becoming the highest-capped male or female player on the continent.
