Super Eagles strike sensation, Victor Boniface scored his first goal of the year on return from injury for Bayer Leverkusen with a brilliant header, leading the German club to a first-leg victory against West Ham United in the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night.
It was a challenging game for Xabi Alonso’s side as they had to wait until the final 10 minutes of the game to break down a compact West Ham defence, scoring two goals after a goalless first half.
The duo of Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface, who were second-half substitutes, ensured Die Werkself’s unbeaten run in all competitions extended to 42 games, with their goals in the 83rd and 91st minute, respectively.
Hofmann broke the deadlock with seven minutes left on the clock. A corner kick taken by Alejandro Grimaldo fell to Boniface, who took a first-time shot, only for his attempt to be blocked.
The ball then fell to Hofmann, who swung his left foot through the ball to score his 8th goal of the season.
Boniface put the icing on the cake for Leverkusen with the second goal of the game, heading home from a Jonas Hofmann corner.
