Former Senegalese diplomat and FIFA’s Secretary General – Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura, was honored at the Accor Stadium in Sydney, Australia, in the final proceedings after Spain reigned supreme over England in a 1-0 encounter.
The stadium was filled with glitz and glam as FIFA’s senior executives lined up to adorn the winning team alongside the runner-ups, with award winners also taking their spots on the podium.
Fatma Samoura was also part of the honorarium after the hosts pulled up a banner on the big screen in the stadium, appreciating her influence and immense participation in the Women’s game.
“Thank You, FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura,” read the board.
Samoura, who paid courtesy visits to teams during the competition, including the Super Falcons of Nigeria, after progressing from the Group Stage, was touched by the gesture and expressed her heartfelt feelings via her official social media page.
“What a wonderful touch by all at Australia. I leave your amazing city & wonderful country with a mixture of great pride & also fantastic memories of the astonishing matches, players, fans & all those who have contributed behind the scenes,” she posted.
Born in Dakar, Senegal, Fatma Samoura was appointed as the first female Secretary General of FIFA by President – Gianni Infantino, assuming her post on the 20th of June 2016.
