Premier League side Fulham is set to cough out €21million for Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as the former Rangers man is set to bring a nightmare spell at Ajax to an end – but his move won’t benefit the Ibrox side

The Nigeria international will leave the Eredivise this summer for a switch to London less than a year on from leaving Rangers for in a club-record deal for the Premiership outfit in a €22m (£19m) switch to the then-Dutch champions. Big things were expected from the 23-year-old off the back of his key role in helping the Light Blues to the Europa League final – but he failed to recreate his success with Gers in the Netherlands.

Fulham are now set to take Bassey to Craven Cottage for a package in the region of €21m as he looks to kickstart his career south of the border under Marco Silva. However, it is the price tag that looks to have ended any hopes of Rangers landing a sell-on payday this summer.

When Bassey left Ibrox a further €5m in potential add-ons was negotiated as well as a sell-on of 10 per cent. However, that would only be activated in future sales if Bassey was to be sold for more than that amount in the future.

Fulham are unlikely to come close to surpassing the fee that Ajax paid Rangers to bring the maligned centre-back to the Eredivise. But the final fee that Rangers received from Bassey’s sale remains a club record outgoing – surpassing the £16.5m package that saw Nathan Patterson join Everton.
