Gidi Giants on Sunday won the maiden Lagos State Basketball Governor’s Cup after beating Comets Nation 55-47.
For winning the title, Gidi Giants smiled to the bank to cash out Two hundred and fifty thousand naira as the cash gift while the runners up got One Hundred and fifty thousand naira.
Speaking after the final, an elated Lai Alimi, Head Coach Gidi Giants praised the never-say-die attitude of the players for coming from behind to outscore the tough opponents. The coach was excited to have won the tournament.
He described the tournament as a stepping stone for many players who participated. He also thanked the Lagos State Basketball Association for organizing such tournament for players to showcase their skills.
“I am happy that the players took the game to the opponents when it mattered most, winning Comets Nation is not an easy task but they did it following their never-say-die attitude that saw them beating one of the best team in the tournament. Kudos must be given to the organiser, the Lagos Basketball Association for organizing a tournament for players to display their God-given talents.
The inaugural Governor’s Cup which was organised for young male and female basketball players commenced on 18th and ended 31st December, 2023. It was held at Sox different venues.
Led by Chairperson of the Association, Ms Barbara Atinuke Harper, the Lagos State Basketball Association said that they were satisfied with the competition adding the aim and objective for organizing the event was achieved.
Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of the Association who doubles as the Technical Committee, Olumide Oyedeji said, “the Association decided to use different venues so as to spread across the tentacles and also to discover hidden talents from across the State. He added that the next edition would be bigger and better.
