The Bafana Bafana team of South Africa on Tuesday night advanced to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought victory over 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco in the Round of 16.

Orlando Pirates’ forward, Evidence Makgopa and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Teboho Mokoena were the men who sealed the spot in the last eight for Hugo Broos’ side.

Makgopa put South Africa ahead in the 57th minute to stun the Atlas Lions. Morocco had a chance to draw themselves back into the game from the penalty spot but Achraf Hakimi fluffed his effort to the dismay of the North Africans.

But just when it looked like the game will end that way, the Atlas Lions were reduced to ten men as Sofyan Amrabat got his marching orders deep into added time to put the result beyond Walid Regragui’s side.

However, the icing on the cake came just seconds later as Mokoena doubled South Africa’s lead to send the 1996 AFCON champions to the last eight.

South Africa will now face Cape Verde in the quarter-final of the competition on Saturday.
