Liverpool could be without Mo Salah for start of 2021/22 season as Egypt include winger in preliminary squad for Olympics

Recent actions on the part of the Egyptian FA could mean that Mohamed Salah misses the start of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign.

Egypt select Salah

Covid-19, of course, impacted numerous sporting events last year.

Two of the most notable to have been affected – Euro 2020 and the Olympics – have since been reschedule for this summer.

Football (soccer) is played out at every Olympics, with Brazil having taken home the gold back in 2016.

Each country’s squad for the tournament, meanwhile, is made up of under-23 stars, along with three senior players.

And Egypt, today, have included Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as one of their three overaged stars, in the Pharaohs’ preliminary squad.

Egypt under-23 coach Shawky Gharib confirmed the news, revealing that the country intend to hold official talks with Liverpool about the decision after the next international break this month:

“Egypt Under-23s team’s preliminary squad will be led by Mohamed Salah and Mohamed El-Shennawi alongside another goalkeeper.

“Salah is currently one of the most important players in the world and it’s normal to call him for Egypt’s Olympic squad.

“We will start the official talks with Liverpool after the international break next March.”

Liverpool could lose Salah for start of 2021/22

So, if Salah is indeed chosen to represent his country in Tokyo, Liverpool could well be without their star man for the start of next season’s Premier League campaign.

As per the Liverpool Echo:

With the Olympics scheduled to take place in Tokyo between Friday 23 July and Sunday 8 August, Salah would miss some of Liverpool’s pre-season and the start of the 2021/22 Premier League season.

An official start date for the 2021/22 campaign is yet to be announced.

But, in seasons not impacted by Covid-19, the English top-flight generally kicks off on the 2nd weekend of August, with the 2019/20 campaign having begun on Friday the 9th of August. This means we could well see the Premier League season begin on the 7th of August this year, which would overlap with the Olympics.
