Ahead of the August 29th election of the Malian Football Federation, the incumbent president Mamatou Toure has been arrested and is presently in detention for embezzlement of public funds.
The Malian football supremo was arrested on Wednesday after he officially launched his campaign for another term in office.
The strong man of Malian football is accused of embezzlement of public funds, dating from the time when he held the position of accountant at the National Assembly, in 2013.
Toure is having a tough time with his challenger Salaha Baby who is also eyeing the position.
Salaha had mentioned embezzlement during his campaign and accused the outgoing of trying to invalidate his candidacy, before announcing the referral to the sports authorities.
Toure presently enjoys the support of 21 clubs, 6 regional leagues (Bamako, Kayes, Ségou, Sikasso, Mopti and Gao) as well as three football families (associations of coaches, doctors and referees).
