Lionel Messi has suggested that international retirement may not be far around the corner after the World Cup later this year.
On Friday night, Messi featured in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela, his country having already secured their place in Qatar in November.
However, when speaking to the media after the game, the 34-year-old hinted that he may choose the end of that tournament for his career to take a new direction.
Messi said: “I don’t know what I will do after the World Cup. I am thinking about what is coming. After Qatar I will have to reassess many things.
“The truth is I don’t know. I think about what is coming, which is close, Ecuador (on Tuesday). The preparation matches in June and September. Let’s hope these go the best way possible. But for sure after the World Cup many things will change.”
The Paris Saint-Germain forward has endured a below-par year in the French capital, contributing seven goals and 10 assists from his 25 appearances in all competitions.
